Put plainly, this does not feel like a fully-realized album in any way, instead seeming like a hastily slapped-together mixtape that includes tracks that just should not have made the cut. However, the outro doesn't add anything to the end product, and it also makes the track itself sound disjointed. The song itself is very well done, even though Soul ends up being a little heavy-handed lyrically here. It ends up creating a segmented and frustrating listen, and 'Tree of Life' demonstrates this beautifully. As charismatic as Ab-Soul can be, it's mind-numbing how quickly he can change from socially conscious to a drug-addled party rapper. I haven't tried to give an album more time to grow on me in quite awhile, as tracks like 'Gods Reign' lead me to believe that there has to be something that I'm missing on abysmal songs such as 'Twact'. It's more the idea that it's the most wildly inconsistent album of 2014 thus far. is probably the most depressing release this year for me not necessarily because of the subject matter, or even the lyrical content that Ab-Soul displays throughout the album. Review Summary: Overall, Ab-Soul's everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach on the album hinders much more than it helps, and at the end of the day we are left with about five tracks that are thoroughly entertaining and worthy of a listen.
